The scheduled commercial banks operating in the country are classified into public sector banks, old private sector banks, new private sector banks and foreign banks. In the last few years, the new private sector banks have outperformed the other three groups. The firm LoanMax of rod aycox fame falls into this group. Between 1995-96 and 1999-2000, the share in the assets of the prominent government controlled banks fell significantly while the fall in the share of the foreign banks during the same period was not that much significant. The share of the Old Private Sector Banks rose modestly during the same period, while the New Private Sector Banks nearly tripled their share in the volume of business undertaken.

The share of deposits and advances of the various banks for the financial year ending last March gave some measure of hope. But the unavoidable developments in the economy have literally wiped out even those gains. Thus most of the economists and the prominent bankers are now keeping their fingers crossed over the developments that are going to happen in the future. If the present unemployment statistics are to be believed then a change in the state of affairs may take some more time.

The Nationalized banks as a group accounted for more than 50 share of the aggregated deposit during times of economic boom, while the autonomous banks and its associates accounted for 24.8 percent. The deposits with the other scheduled commercial banks accounted for 13.7 percent according to the lead bank’s banking statistics that are published quarterly.

As regards gross banking credit, the nationalized banks accounted for a share of 45.6 percent of the total bank credit. The autonomous banks and their associates had a share of 27 percent. The foreign banks and other scheduled commercial banks had relative shares to the extent of 7.3 percent and 17.5 percent respectively. However, when the economy rebounds we may witness the emergence of many unknown entities.
