Opportunities Lie In Unexpected Places

Posted on January 8th, 2007.

The brother of a good friend of mine (who was also a friend) past away this past Tuesday quite unexpectedly after a very minor operation on his foot. I flew up to be with his family. I really don’t like the loss of control that flying presents and probably like many of you have about a thousand things going on at one time so the trip was inconvenient. I struggled with taking that plane flight but I knew that if I didn’t I would regret not being there for a friend in need and after all that this friend has done for me it was truly the very least I could do. So I boarded the plane, continuously wiped the sweat from my brow and prayed like I never have before. The smile on my friend’s face at the sight of seeing me while we stood at the funeral home for his brother is now what I have seared into my memory instead of regret at a missed opportunity to help out a friend in a time of need.

The trip convinced me of a bunch of things not least of which is that life is too short to miss opportunities and sometimes these opportunities present themselves in the most troubling of situations. While flying on the plane I was also convinced that there are many things in life that I cannot control and that I should focus my energies on those things that I can.

So my question to all of you is, are you keeping your eyes open for and seizing opportunities while working on the things that you have power to change?
